Our Sewing Classes are designed to guide and educate individuals from the very beginning of machine operation to the most advanced sewing techniques. Class are open to all. Sips N Sews Members are given priority reservation and discounts on class fees.

Introduction Classes

 

Intro to Sewing: Boot-camp:intro to sewing

Thursday evening from 6:00pm to 9:30pm

The First Saturday of each calendar month, 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm.

Do you want to learn to sew? Intro to Sewing: Boot-camp will take you through all the basics from the Anatomy of a Sewing Machine to Stitch Selections, Basic Measurements, Notions, and hands on practice sheets designed to teach seam allowance, straight stitch, zigzag, and how to do curves and pivot corners.

Class is limited to 8 people, please reserve your space now.

Introduction to Quilting:

Tuesdays from 5:30pm to 9:30pm

Introduction to Quilting will concentrate on guiding the student from the very beginning of piecing techniques and why they are important to follow and ending with basic block building. Basic sewing machine techniques are required as using a sewing machine is part of the curriculum.

Bring to class: rotary cutter with blade and 3 pieces of coordinating fabrics – 1/4 yrd each.

The Best Messenger Bag Ever

Make the best messenger bag, learning skills such as how to read patterns, the proper way to lay patterns on the fabric, tips for cutting out patterns, putting in lining and zippers. Making adjustable strap with sliders, constructing and attaching advanced patch pockets, and adding a decorative elements.

1 1/2 yards of self woven fabric medium weight non stretch. 1 1/2 yards of woven lining fabric, lightweight non stretch. One set of adjustable sides for the strap 1 1/2″ wide, one 7″ jeans zipper, one 20″ regular zipper. (optional) decorative element, patch, etc.

Re-Patterning a Basic Skirt

Bring a basic pencil skirt pattern that fits you and learn how to re-cut the pattern to make many different styles of skirts. Techniques will be introduced using a 1/4 scale pencil skirt pattern You will learn how to manipulate this basic skirt shape into many different skirt designs. You will then be able to make the same adjustments to your own basic pencil skirt pattern.

Hand Sewing Basics

Have you lost a button on a shirt, or a snap has come loose, lost the eye or hook from a hook and eye to close the top of your garment, or part of your hem come undone and you have no idea how to fix them? Instead of paying high prices to have these simple “fixes” taken care of, take this class to learn how to sew a flat and shank button on properly, sew a snap, a hook and eye, pants or skirt hook and bar, and do an easy blind hem stitch. A kit with all fabrics, buttons, hooks, eyes, and bars will be provided along with printed out instruction sheets.

Re-Patterning a Basic Top

Bring a basic fitted blouse/top pattern that fits you and learn how to re-cut the pattern to make many different styles of tops. Techniques will be introduced using a 1/4 scale sloper for a basic top – front, back, sleeves, and a collar. You will learn how to manipulate this basic top shape into many different top designs. You will then be able to make the same adjustments to your own basic top pattern

Soft, Silky, and Sheer

In this class, you will learn how to finish seams and hems on challenging fabrics. Students will start a simple project from suggested patterns to practice the techniques learned from doing the samples.

Zip It!- Zippers

In this class, you will learn how to sew a railroad zipper, lapped zipper and an invisible zipper. You will leave this class with sewn samples of the three zippers. As well as a cute lined zipper pouch, that you will construct in the class.

Pattern making; How to make your Basic Block: The Bodice Sloper

You’ll create a moulage, or a precise fabric blueprint of the upper body. Start simple with how to take accurate measurements, then move on to learning how to draft both your front/back moulage based on accurate measurements. Next, we will go through, step-by-step, to refine the fit. With your moulage patterns perfectly customized, you’ll put them to use as you find out how to make a bodice sloper and complete with wearing ease. We will also discuss design options that can be created from your bodice sloper, and how to transform your woven sloper into a knit sloper.

Pattern making Basics: Drafting Men/Women Pants

Learn to draft custom pant slopers with confidence, base on accurate measurements. Create the foundation for designing all the perfectly fitting pants for you. Start simple with how to take accurate measurements and transform them into the waist shaping, dart placement, crotch curve and seam lines for your sloper. This class offers an in depth education on Home Decor Pillows and Covers. Learn every detail about making high end Home Decorative pillows. Such as; What pillow size will work for your concept, How to create a well fitting pillow cover, How to create that perfect plump pillow shape, How to make and apply piping, How to create an envelope style pillow cover, What closure works best for your home decor, How to avoid the "pointy ears" on a pillow and more.

Skills to be taught: Measuring, pattern making, cutting, pinning, sewing corners, installing zippers, velcro, or buttons, make and apply piping.

Monthly Classes

Machine Embroidery 101:
This class will address the basics of machine embroidery, including monograms and other basic embroidery designs. Emphasis on interfacing choice, thread choice and design placement. Class size is limited, advanced sign up is required. Call the front desk to claim a spot.

Sewist in Training Project Classes:
This class is offering projects that will cater toward children from ages 8 to 15. Each project will be designed for a specific age group. The class will be advertised as a project for the specific age group, such as using a sewing machine to make a throw blanket for ages 8 to 10; or creating backpacks for ages 10 to 13. These are just a few of the projects that will be taught. The project lists also include pot holders, pillowcases, jewelry bags, book covers, scarves, hats, vests, tote bags, and quillows.

 

 

Other Themed Classes:

Gift giving – Sewing Style: This project class can include quillows, naptime totes, baby blankets, bibs, aprons, hats, scarves, include throw pillows, curtains, dish towels, throws, appliance covers, table runners, and placemats with napkins. This class will not be limited to this list, students or members are welcome to request specific projects. Holidays will also influence the projects taught.

Father N Kid for Mom's Day: This project class will provide an easy put together item that Fathers can work with children to create a custom gift for Mother’s Day.

Fan Gear: This class creates custom MLB such as, scarves, hats, purses, bags, backpacks, blankets, ponchos, shirts, pants and seat cushions. This is specifically generated for the City's sports teams San Francisco Giants, Golden State Warriors and San Francisco 49'ers. * Fabric is not included, you must bring your franchise approved logo fabric to class *

Valentine’s Day: These project class will guide members to completion of items that are associated with Valentine’s Day such as Heart shaped pillows, boxers, robes, wraps, scarves, hats, bags.

Halloween: This project class will be directed toward decorations such as wall hangs, trick or treat bags, flags, table linens, bathroom decorations.

Thanksgiving: This project class will concentrate on table decorations.

Christmas Holiday: These project classes will guide member through completion of custom table linens, ornaments, gifts, tree skirts, wine bottle bags and other Christmas items.
